Surviving a Day Flight (aka – Don’t fly ELAL)

A couple week ago I had to change my ticket last minute and instead of my usual nighttime (either LY001 on ELAL at 1:00 a.m. or CO86 at 11:00 PM) I had to take a day flight. Luckily I opted or Continental’s 11:25 flight instead of ELAL. Why?

I rarely watch movies on flights. In fact in the past 10 years of travelling I can probably name all the movies I have seen. By the time the wheels are up I have already popped my Ambian and getting a good nights sleep. But flying during the day is a whole different story. Even if I got a few hours nap there is still a good deal of the flight that I am awake so I started flipping through the  TV and movie options that are available on Continental. Turns out there are are about 70 movies and many more TV shows to chose from. I had no problem killing 5 hours on the flight with 3 movies. On ELAL I would have at best had 8-10 movies to choose from.

There are many benefits (and some draw backs) to the Continental entertainment system compared to ELAL and I will go through the details in another post soon.

More ELAL Web Site Woes…

A few weeks back I wrote about the new ELAL web site that was rolled out. Its still a major improvment over what they used to have but some of the bugs still drive me crazy.  For example on teh top of the page there is a drop down to choose your language. This drops down a very nice selector that lets you set your default language and country options. The problem is the checkbox that says “remember this selection” doesn’t actually work. ARGH!!!! So annoying and something so simple to fix!

Kudos to ELAL Pilots On a Safe Landing

As news agencies in Israel reported early this morning, ELAL flight 027 to Newark had to make an emergency landing back in Tel-Aviv shortly after takeoff. Thank G-d the pilots made a safe landing and all passengers aboard the flight were OK. Apparently there was a technical problem with one of the wheels and the flight had to circle for hours to wait for daylight and dumped fuel before making the landing.

As someone who experienced first hand the need to make an emergency landing I know what the passengers were going through. When making the final approach and seeing all the lights, fire engines and ambulances lined up on the runway one realizes that you are hopeless to do anything other then rely on the experience and expertise of the pilots.

In situations like this there is certainly no one other then ELAL pilots that I would want at the head of the aircraft.

ELAL Lounge Comparison

If you have read any of my other posts you know I am not shy about telling ELAL how I feel about their service. One area where ELAL deserves credit and high marks is for their lounges. Anyone flying out of Israel will appreciate the comfort, size and  food available in the ELAL lounge as compared to the DAN lounge which services other airlines.

The ELAL lounge offers a nice selection of food including wines, salads and several coffee machines. There is always plenty to eat and the service is excellent at refilling and cleaning the empty plates. If there is one minor complaint its that there are not enough tables to eat at. I have one friend who used to fly a lot on Sunday nights and told me he secretly would hope that there were not enough left overs from Shabbos meals so that he would be dairy on Sunday night when flying and can eat in the lounge. I am not sure I would go that far but hey, to each his own….

Hidden away upstairs on the 2nd floor are a number of large leather recliners with built in massager. If you would prefer the real thing you can sign up and get one of a handful of treatments in the massage room hosted by the Carmel Spa. The price is extremely reduced and only costs $15-$20 per treatment. Tip: sign up early at the front desk as these get filled up quickly. If you didn’t have time to shower before leaving there are 2 shower rooms which are clean and prior to going in you are given fresh towels.

The Dan lounge offers some nice quite space but nowhere near the amenities of the ELAL lounge.

When travelling to Israel I have had some mixed experiences with ELAL. The lounge at JFK is nice but gets filled up very quickly and many times I have had trouble getting a seat. Again, there is a nice selection of food, free Internet but I often skip the lounge and go straight to the gate and find a nice secluded corner to sit in. The fact that the lounge is before the TSA security is a downside but this is not exclusive to ELAL.

In LAX, EWR and LHR airports ELAL shares a lounge with other airlines. This puts a limit on the kosher food available but you are no worse off then flying any other airline.

All in all I give a 2 thumbs up to ELAL for the lounge service and I believe other airlines can learn a thing or 2 from them.

ELAL Random Price Check #2

So the Pesach high season is over and everyone is back home. I figured this would be another good time to check on pricing between ELAL and Continental again. The dates I chose randomly are outbound from Tel Aviv on Monday May 23rd and Returning to Israel on Tuesday May 31st. And the winner is (prices are round trip as advertised on both web sites)…..

ELAL – $1352,95
Continental- $1206.00

Oh well. I really thought ELAL had a chance at this one.

How flat is flat? A lok at ELAL business Class Seats

Lets face it for most flyers who are forking over the money for a business class seat there is only one thing that matters- how comfortable is that seat? While the food is nice and I may actually eat it once in a while if I am seated in business class (as opposed to economy) what I really want to do when I get on that plane is sleep!

When comparing the comfort of ELAL business class seats with that of other airlines you really need to look at 2 things: a) How wide is the seat b) What is the reclining angle (how far back does it recline).  According to seatguru.com ELAL provides on both its 747 and 777 a seat width of 19.6” and a “lie flat” seats. Continental on the other hand provides 22” width and “full flat bed”.

So what’s the difference between ELAL “lie flat” and Continental “full flat bed”? Seatguru explains as follows:

Lie-Flat Seats: While airlines often market these seats as having 180 degrees of recline, in their fully reclined position they are slightly angled and do not lay completely horizontal. Passengers often find these seats to be extremely comfortable for relaxing and working, but not conducive to sleep when in the fully reclined position because of the awkward angle.

Flat Bed Seats: When fully reclined, these seats are completely horizontal, creating a bed that is fully flat. These seats always receive high accolades for being comfortable both as seats and beds.

As you can see the seats on ELAL are not quite as advertised.  Don’t get me wrong, I would take it over coach any day of the week but if you are deciding between the 2 and seat comfort is important to you Continental is the way to go.

A Look at ELAL Duty Free

I am not a big fan of in flight duty free. First, I find the prices to be consistently higher then buying in the airport. Second, I hate being disturbed on the plane and I barely put up with the food service. The duty free cart is just one annoying thing we can do without. Unfortunately, I don’t think this will be stopping on any airline any time soon. (I was once told ,but have not been able to confirm, that the flight crew gets a big commission from the sales of duty free).

Given that duty free is here to stay I thought I would take a look at the offerings on both Continental and ELAL and do a little price comparison. I am only going to compare identical products in the liquor and tobacco sections

Chivas Regal 12 Year Old Premimum Scotch Whisky:
ELAL – $45
Continental – $37

Johine Walker Blue Label 750 ml:
ELAL- $165
Continental – $142

Remy Martin VSOP Cognac 1 Liter
ELAL – $60
Continental – $55

Grey Goose Vodka 1 Liter
ELAL $46
Continental – $35

Marlboro Box (10 Packs)
ELAL – $39
Continental – $31

As you can see ELAL is consistently higher priced! I didn’t go through the whole product catalogs of both airlines (ELAL has a much larger catalog) but I have no reason to assume these products are not representative of the pricing differences across the board.

I did a quick Internet search and found the first link I clicked on for Marlboro Box 10 Pack gave me a price of $21. I am very skeptical of Duty Free in general but in the case of ELAL clearly you can do better buying elsewhere.

More Leg Room Coming on United

As may have heard Continental and United announced a merger earlier this year and the 2 airlines will operate under the United name. The merger is happening in phases and will effect different parts of the service at various times.  I just got an email from Continental that I was happy to read and hope this change is introduced fast.

One of my few negative experiences with Continental has been that under every seat there is a box housing the advanced entertainment system (more about this in a future article). On ELAL because of the limited movie selection there is no need for a box under each seat giving a passenger the ability to stretch his legs under the seat in front of him.  On Continental you can’t do this. This is especially uncomfortable for tall travelers.

Well it looks like this problem will be coming to an end. Based on this email I received all Continental planes will be refitted with a new class of service already available on United, Economy Plus.  This class will be available at no extra charge to Elite status members and will offer 5 extra inches of leg room.

Depending on how comfortable this ends up being Economy Plus could end up posing a real challenge to ELAL Business class. While the seats are not nearly as large or recline as much the extra leg room may be all that some passengers need to make the switch. ELAL Would be wise to take note of this and offer such a class of service on its planes making it free to Matmid members.

More on ELAL Upgrades

A few days a go I wrote about the  elusive ELAL last minute “free” upgrade to Business class from Economy. I basically explained that unless you are platinum or flying on a Tuesday you can pretty much forget about the upgrade. I also showed how the extra cost of an upgradable ticket is not worth it and basically makes your “free” upgrade cost $300-$400.

A few readers commented that while its true that its harder and harder to get an upgrade on ELAL its not right to fault them for this because Continental does not even offer last minute upgrades. Why fault ELAL for a benefit that others don’t even offer.

Let me explain with 2 very important points:

One, while its true that Continental won’t upgrade you on your flight to or from Tel-Aviv if you are continuing to anywhere else in the US you do qualify for the free upgrade (and in this case it is really free! No points or money.)

Second,  Once you reach platinum level on Onepass you are given as a gift 6 upgrade vouchers and for every 50K miles extra you fly you get 2 more. These are not last minute upgrade vouchers, they can be used in advance and are 100% free! What this means is that if you fly once a month to or from Newark you will earn 8 free upgrade tickets your first year and 6 from then on. Again, these a rent last minute vouchers (although they are subject to availability) and can be booked in advance of your flight. That’s 4 out 12 round-trip flights your first year that you can fly in Continental Business First seats. Even a  platinum member on ELAL Matmid will not get those numbers on the popular days.

Take into account the extra money that you need to pay on ELAL for an upgradable ticket and you can clearly see why the upgrade situation on Continental to Israel is a much better way to go.

Even ELAL Gets it Right – Sometimes

New ELAL home page

ELAL has rolled out a new web site and I really like it. The colors are softer and the navigation is much easier to use then the previous design.  I am not sure if it complete yet as many of the inner pages look the same and seem to have been wrapped int eh new header and background. I assume at some point they will get around to redoing the inner pages as well – but I wouldn’t bet on it. The broken page that I reported here is still broken. I will overlook this for now and come back and check in a few weeks to see if any further progress has been made. ELAL has a history of dropping things at 80% done. I hope this time they finish off the project.
